Heading for Home

July 18-19, 2002 – Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City to Tampa

The day started out pretty slow. Chrissy took the kids to the pool while I did some work, then we started the trip south to Salt Lake City. Along the way we stopped for gas and it happened to be the same place we stopped on the way from Salt Lake to Jackson at the beginning of the trip. Aaron noticed and recognized the place. He is very observant and has a good memory.

We read about a farm near Salt Lake that you could visit so we thought that would be a fun thing to do on our last afternoon before heading home. We were hurrying to get there before they closed so we stopped for the second and last fast food meal of the trip – Burger King. We made it to the farm with plenty of time to spare.

It turned out to be an old farm which is now operated by Salt Lake County as a County park. All of the buildings had been restored and they had lots of old farm equipment, including an old Farmall Cub tractor. They had cows, two calves, pigs, sheep, chickens, and ducks. We took a wagon ride behind a tractor and enjoyed the visit very much.

After the farm we went to the hotel and swam (common theme!), then went to the Marketplace in downtown Salt Lake City. It was built as the Olympics were coming to town. A big shopping area like so many cites have developed. We had dinner at California Pizza Kitchen, dessert at Ben and Jerry’s, and an early bed time for our early morning flight.

We got up early for a 7-something flight – Salt Lake to Phoenix to Tampa. Aaron made his first trip to Arizona and we got to see the Grand Canyon as we flew over. The last excitement of the trip came as we pulled up to the gate in Tampa and Southwest’s Shamu plane was parked at the next gate over. The kids loved it and wanted to get on it to go wherever it was going. They didn’t care where, and still don’t. Where Are We Going Now?

It was a great trip in terms of what we saw and how smooth our travels went. And it really cemented our love of travel, laying the foundation for many years of adventure and fun.
