Thursday, July 9, 2009 –Anchorage, AK to Palmer, AK
Ten people, four generations, two flights, four time zones, what could go wrong? Turns out, not much. The trip from Tampa to Anchorage on Wednesday, July 8 was uneventful so not much to write about here. We arrived in Anchorage Wednesday night, took a shuttle to the Courtyard hotel and settled down for the night.
The adventure began in earnest Thursday morning. Dad, Andy, Chrissy, and I took a cab to the RV rental place. We had a great cab driver. He had been driving a cab in Anchorage for over 30 years and knew the city like the back of his hand. At the rental center we watched an orientation video, filled out a bunch of paperwork, inspected the RVs and we were off! Back to the hotel to pick up the rest of the crew, a stop at a store to stock up on groceries, then on to the Fox Run RV park in Palmer. We figured picking up the RVs, stopping to stock up, and a 50 mile drive would be enough for the first day, and we were right. There was a nice lake at the RV park. We rented a rowboat and Andy, the kids, and I rowed across. The kids went swimming and jumped off a rope swing.

The midnight sun really took some getting used to. That evening we were sitting around the campfire talking, laughing, and having a grand old time when I noticed no one else was out and about. I then saw a few faces popping up in windows of other RVs giving us the “evil eye”. I then looked at my watch and realized it was after 10:00 pm, but it wasn’t even dusk yet! Once we figured it out we quieted down, went in the RVs, and tried to sleep. Between the light and the excitement over finally being in Alaska it wasn’t easy!

Everyone looks a lot younger. Alaska is still on my list of places to visit.
