Chillin’ in Kenai

Monday, July 20, 2009 – Kenai

Monday was a pretty laid-back day. We went into Soldotna to the bridge over the Kenai River. There were lots of fishermen along the docks and we watched them for quite a while, which led to us wanting our own fishing experience. Before we left home I wanted to work it out where we could go fishing for Halibut out of Homer, but we weren’t able to make that happen. That will be something for a future trip when I go back for another Backpacker at the Moose’s Tooth.

Making a last-minute decision to go salmon fishing during the busiest time of the year started looking like a pretty poor decision. The proprietor of our campground tried to help us find a guide but to no avail. We were about to give up when we went in the Visitor Center in Soldotna and found a brochure for a guy in Cooper Landing who did fishing and wildlife float trips. He didn’t have any availability but he hooked us up with Kenai River Fly-Fishing, who did have availability, so we were booked for Tuesday – Chrissy, Delaney, and Gami on a float trip and Andy, Aaron, and I on a fishing trip.

We spent the rest of the day wandering around Soldotna and Kenai. We watched airplanes from the Kenai Municipal Airport, saw Fort Kenay, a historic Russian Orthodox Church, and watched dipnetters again for quite a while. A nice relaxing day in preparation for fishing.
