Sunday and Monday, October 20-21, 2019, Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii
It was hard to believe Sunday was already our last full day in Maui. Time indeed flies when you’re having fun. It was another very lazy, relaxing day. In the morning we walked a few blocks up the street to the public beach. We found a shady spot under a tree and just sat for a while. In the afternoon we went to Lahaina and browsed around. I restocked my supply of aloha shirts and we went in several art galleries. We ended up at the bar at a restaurant called Cheeseburger in Paradise (http://www.cheeseburgernation.com/menu-for-lahaina/ ), overlooking the water and chatting with the bartender about her 17 year old daughter who was planning to go away to the University of Hawaii on Oahu in a year. With the pandemic upsetting everyone’s plans, I wonder if she made it.

We ended the day with the Old Lahaina Luau (https://oldlahainaluau.com/) , which we experienced on our first trip to Maui 17 years earlier. The food, drink, service, setting, and show were all great. A fantastic experience before heading home.
Monday morning brought my last Hawaiian run and some downtime next to the ocean, sipping coffee and looking a Lanai and Molokai one last time before heading to the airport.

We were plenty early for the airport, so we stopped at a little local place called Tin Roof Maui (https://www.tinroofmaui.com/) for our last Hawaiian meal, and then I went next door to O’Carney’s Barber Shop (https://www.ocarneys.com/) for a haircut. The hair was long and we had time to kill, so why not get a Hawaiian haircut? I can’t remember the barber’s name but I remember that he moved to Hawaii from the mainland many years before. He loves Hawaii and makes enough as a barber to live the lifestyle he wants. He seemed very happy, and also gave me a great haircut.
Trips like this one make me understand the sentiment behind Jimmy Buffet’s “Wonder Why We Ever Go Home”. But home is wonderful too. And just like that, Southwest whisked us through San Jose and Las Vegas back to Milwaukee. Back to work, beer gardens, fall colors, and all the other things that make Milwaukee a great place to live. Another great trip in the books, and the most relaxing vacation in quite a long while. Aloha!
