Surf(er) Watching

Tuesday, December 31, 2013 – Los Angeles to San Diego

After sleeping off our long day at Disneyland, we hit the road from Anaheim back to LA to complete our trip along the coast. We drove from Santa Monica to Dana Point before hopping on the I-5 freeway to finish the journey to San Diego.

Santa Monica and Venice Beach were both a bit “sketchy,” as the kids would say, but the beaches got progressively nicer as we moved south. We made a stop at Huntington Beach to watch the surfers for a while—there’s something mesmerizing about seeing them ride the waves. Eventually, we made our way to San Diego and checked into our hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter. The Gaslamp was buzzing with energy on New Year’s Eve. We enjoyed dinner at an Irish pub and then headed back to our room to ring in 2014 in a more private, low-key way at midnight. It was a calm, laid-back day — we didn’t even take any pictures! It was just what we needed to recharge before the final days of our California adventure.
