San Diego Bay

Wednesday, January 1, 2014 – San Diego

We kicked off the new year with breakfast at Richard Walker’s Pancake House, famous for their oven-baked apple pancakes. Chrissy and Delaney went for the signature apple cakes, while I opted for a baked pancake loaded with broccoli, mushrooms, onions, and Havarti cheese. Aaron, sticking to the classics, had bacon pancakes. Everything was delicious and gave us plenty of fuel for the day ahead.

With full bellies, we spent the day exploring the waterfront and Seaport Village, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. In the late afternoon, we capped off our sightseeing with a bay cruise. The tour gave us a new perspective on San Diego Bay, where we spotted sea lions, San Diego Airport, the Coronado Bridge, and a fleet of Navy ships, including two Nimitz-class aircraft carriers—one of which was the USS Ronald Reagan. Despite all my work trips to San Diego, I’d never seen the city from the water like that before.

To end the day, we enjoyed an Italian dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter. The food was fantastic, and our waiter’s voice bore a striking resemblance to Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove. It was a fun and fitting end to a great day.
