In the winter of 2023 we moved into a house across from a lake. As we experienced our first New England spring I tried to capture the transition from the cold, dark long nights of winter to the warm, bright long days of summer.
First Spring at Crystal Lake
Winter.
Up before dawn.
Still awake after dark.
Cold. Ice. Snow.
Reliable furnace.
Cozy blankets.
The fireplace feels so good.
Then a little warmer.
Maybe just a sweatshirt today.
Is that tree turning a little green?
Some daylight for the morning run.
Songbirds’ melodies start to fill every morning.
Turkey gobble greetings from the hill.
Leaves and flowers appear – timidly at first,
Then exploding like fireworks on the 4ᵗʰ of July.
Windows are open.
Lawn mowers hum.
Splashing children echo across the lake.
Warm days, cool evenings.
T-shirts, flip-flops.
To bed with evening’s glow in the sky.
Awakened by sunbeams.
Summer.
