First Grade Soldiers

This one was inspired by an article in the Wall Street Journal last week:

I read an article the other night –

It said the Russian army is teaching first-graders to fight.

The quote said: “Man is not made for peace, man is made for war”.

But if that’s really true, what’s a big loving heart for?

And is the West really all that different, teaching children to compete?

Work hard, stay busy, get ahead – from the ballfield to Wall Street.

We fight and claw and step on others to prove that we are right,

And once we win one battle, we go looking for the next fight.

We’ve evolved from animals – they fight for food and mates,

But we’ve become civilized – we shop and go on dates.

We have learned to cook and clean and how to wear nice clothes.

We don’t burp or fart in public, and we try not to pick our nose.

We make art, we read and write, and we entertain with song.

If we manage all of that, why can’t we get along?

Whether you listen to Jesus, or Buddha, or just your inner voice,

You know that humans are mostly the same – seeing differences is a choice.

So lay down your arms, stop shouting, and listen more each day.

Be kind, patient, and humble and you’ll spread peace along the way.

Your actions may not change the course of the entire human race,

But those you touch – and the little ones watching – will learn something from your grace.
