Peaceful Day

58,318 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to our right, invisible behind the hill but there all the same.

19 statues in the Korean War Veterans Memorial to our left, looking like shadows moving among the snow and trees.

4,048 stars, each representing 100 lives lost, shimmering in the winter sun on the World War II Memorial behind us.

One statue of Abraham Lincoln to our front. A reminder of slavery and war and emancipation and unity.

And in front of Lincoln, among these reminders of war and strife,

19 monks. Not triumphant. Not celebrating. Just humbly bringing awareness to peace.

2,300 miles walked by these monks to bring attention to peace and to arrive in this moment.

One dog as calm and peaceful as his monks, reaching hearts in ways another human cannot.

One small bunch of flowers, given by a monk, bringing tears of gratitude.

Thousands gathered quietly and respectfully on a Wednesday afternoon to show our nation and the world that we stand for peace.

Five points on the Walk for Peace flag:

Lovingkindness, Compassion, Love, Harmony, Hope

One bunch of flowers, bringing tears a second time as they are left at the Korean War Memorial in memory of a father who served in that conflict.

Two people grateful for the monks, grateful to be present in this moment, and hopeful for the future.

Peace isn’t something reserved for 2,300 mile walks or large gatherings on the National Mall. Peace begins with each of us, every day.

Are we treating everyone, and I mean everyone, with lovingkindness and compassion?

Do we truly love every human being, starting with ourselves?

Are we seeking harmony over victory?

If we do these things, then there is hope for a peaceful future.

What peaceful choices will I make today?

Today is going to be my peaceful day.

May you and all beings be well, happy, and at peace.
