Island Time

Saturday, October 19, 2019, Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii

The view from our condo was beautiful. We could open the back door and look at Lanai and Molokai. We could walk about 30 feet from that door to the seawall and look at the sea turtles who visited every morning. It was another gorgeous spot to spend a couple of days.

The west side of Maui has a lot of resorts. I went for a run to explore the area and it feels a lot like Lido Key in Sarasota. Obviously quite different also, but a lot of similarities. After the run we had a breakfast of fresh bananas and pineapple, and then ventured out.

This entire trip was restful and lazy, and we got deeper into “Island Time” as the trip went on. We drove up the coast a little and walked out to a point called Dragon’s Teeth. We went on a little farther to an overlook over a cove and watched surfers for a while. Then a little further to see a blowhole, where the waves come in and blow water out of the hole. It was a great sight, made better by the macadamia nut shortbread cookies we bought from a vendor in the parking lot.

After our lazy morning we went to a place called Joey’s Kitchen for lunch. I had pork and cabbage and Chrissy had garlic chicken. Both are common Hawaiian “plate lunches” and both were delicious. After lunch we hung out at the condo, read our books, and napped.

For dinner we almost went in to Lahaina to the Lahaina Grill, but it seemed to be a little higher end. Neither of us felt like getting dressed for dinner nor did we feel like driving far. We found great reviews online for a fish market just up the street from the condo. They sell fresh fish on one side and meals on the other. We got macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi dinners from the market and a $10 bottle of white wine from the ABC store and had an amazing dinner. I guarantee it was as good or better than any restaurant in town, and we didn’t have to go anywhere. Plus, the sunset view from the condo was spectacular – different from Haleakala, but spectacular. It was a great evening.
